Salty Watermelons, The Movie
Salty Watermelons, The Movie
Feature. Shot June/July, 2019. DIRECTOR, ACTOR
A fishing village in Nova Scotia with no fish. The solution? Grow Marry Jane. Oh, and watermelons.
I was originally cast as the cafe owner (Lead) in the film. Once we (cast & crew) got to the remote location it became painfully clear to all us cast members that the writer/producer did not have a director and just expected the film to make itself. (INDIE film making at its worst) A few of us stepped up with the experience and skills we knew could rescue this sinking ship. I took the helm as the director and slashed the nearly 300 page script into a shootable project, worked with another actor to create a daily shooting schedule and away we went. I learned so much on this project, it made me flexible, a creative problem solver, decisive and clear. We finished on time and had great stuff in the can.
Unfortunately, the writer/producer and his gilrfriend (who financed the film) have a never ending difference of opinion and the project has been shelved and will never see the light of day.
I believe it could have become a cult classic. Multiple crazy and endearing characters, too many joints to count. Some Monty Python-esque moments mixed in with real friendship. It could have been a true Canadian Gem.
